The Black-Scholes Model

A brief history and explanation

The Black-Scholes model was developed in 1973 by Fischer Black, Myron Scholes, and Robert Merton. It's one of the most important mathematical models in finance, earning Scholes and Merton the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1997.

The model calculates the theoretical price of European-style options (which can only be exercised at expiration) based on:

  • Current stock price
  • Strike price
  • Time to expiration
  • Volatility of the stock
  • Risk-free interest rate
  • Dividend yield

The Greeks are partial derivatives of the option price with respect to various parameters, giving traders a way to understand and manage the risk of their option positions.
